Getting a Handle on French Encyrption Controls

Until recently, the French government has not been actively enforcing its encryption policy, leading many companies to believe there are no restrictions. However, some US software firms in France have begun to feel pressure that the French government is initiating tighter controls and penalties against companies that either do not register their products or that delay in responding to inquiries asked by the SCSSI as part of the approval process, according to a US Foreign Commercial Service officer in France.
